TUB Swimming

At Kidtastics, we believe even when it's cold outside you can practice valuable swim skills in the bathtub with your child... Supervised of course.

Try These....

~~~~THINGS TO PRACTICE IN THE BATHTUB~~~~
Tummy Activities
~Start by filling up the tub with 2-3 inches of water
~Have your child lay on their tummy and have them use a squirt toy to make bubbles.
~Then have the child imitate the toy and blow bubbles on their own.
~While they are still on their tummy, have them practice kicking their feet.
~Next try having them put their nose in the water, you can ask them" can you tickle your nose in the water?"
~Once they can put their mouth and nose in the water, ask them to hide their eyes in the water.
~If your child is able to do all these skills, you can fill the bath water to the level of their belly button. Have them sit on their knees, blow bubbles, tickle their nose and hide their eyes.
*These tips are a fun way to help the child get comfortable with putting their entire face in the water.
*Using toys in the bathtub is helpful when showing your child how to do certain skills and allows them to imitate their favorite toys.
Back Activities
~Have your child lay flat on their back and kick their feet
~Next, have your child lay on their back in the bathtub with their ears under water while you count to 10, do this 3 times.
~Another way to do this is to put your hand on the back of their head and have them lay back until their ears are under water. If your child can do this without a problem then try having them float on their back. You can place your hands under their neck and lower back if needed.
*Floating on your back can sometimes be a tough skill for kids to learn. If you practice with them in the bath they will be more relaxed when learning the skill in the pool.
Splash!
~Allow your kids to splash their hands and toys in the water so their face gets wet.
~Have your child pour water over their head and let the water drip down their face.(No soap)
~Let your child shower with you by either holding or having them stand with their face under the shower head. This gets the child used to the feeling of coming up and out of the pool.
*The shower gets kids used to having water in their eyes. This helps prevent them from coming out of the water and frantically wiping their eyes in the pool.
*Kids love for the parents to do these activities with them, so jump on in! If you have a big enough tub or choose to use the shower, you can have the child pour water over your head or you can show them how to get their
face and head wet.
Final Tips
~Talk with your children about water safety, include the pool and the bath in these discussions. This is a great time to talk about your own personal rules like not allowing the children to turn on the water in the bathtub.
~Make it a routine! You can have your child do these activities every night during bath time before they shampoo.
~Start now, so when your Kidtastics swim instructor comes, your child can progress even faster.
**These tips can be used year round and you can practice all these activities with your kids no matter what age**
Let us know how they work.
Kidtastics' Shining Star- May
Kidtastics’ Tumbelina Present This Month’s
Shining Star: Collin and Carson
My name is Collin and this is my best bud Carson and we are four years old! When we first started gymnastics we didn’t know what to expect. We first met our teachers Miss Nikki, Miss Amber, and Miss Heidi. They really are a lot of fun. We started the class by being able to run all around and play whatever we wanted until it was time to start class. At first Carson and I were in different groups. We really didn’t mind, but we wanted to be together. So the teacher’s put us in the same group and that was awesome. We learned many great tricks that we can do on our own including teeter-totter’s and cartwheel’s. We also got to play on the bars and balance beam. Our favorite part of gymnastics is doing forward rolls down the cheese and flipping in the doughnut. It is so cool. We really like Miss Nikki because she is really funny and Carson calls her Miss Mickey, which is even more funny. We really have had a great time in gymnastics this whole year. Thank you Kidtastics for teaching us gymnastics and fun games.
Water Safety- what parents & caregivers need to know
I read a great article today about reminding parents and caregivers how to make sure their children are water safe. It's a MUST read.
Review it for your child's safety and then make a list of pool rules for your home and ALWAYS enforce them; even for the children who are 1.5 yrs old. You can start teaching your child water safety at an early age by asking them yes or no questions about the rules. For example, "Are you suppose to go in the pool without an adult?" They answer "no" or shake their head no. Educating kids early about water safety is a successful way to prevent water accidents.
Kidtastics has a list of common pool rules that will aid you when creating your home pool rules.
KIDTASTICS POOL RULES
1. Don’t open the door to go outside
2. Don’t swim alone- must be with an adult
3. Don’t open the gate/ net – only adults are allowed to open them
4. Don’t leave pool toys in the pool
5. Always count 1-2-3 before jumping in or going underwater
6. Don’t push anyone in the pool
7. No running around the pool
8. Don’t jump or dive in shallow end
9. If you cannot swim to the side of the pool then float on your back
10. Don’t jump on the steps
11. Jump out to the middle of the pool when jumping in
12. Tell an adult before trying a flip turn
13. Make sure no one is under the diving board or slide before jumping in
14. Only 1 person on diving board at a time
15. Only go down the water slide if water is on the slide and an adult is watching
16. If you fall off the step you must swim back to the step
17. No climbing on the fountains or jumping off the rocks
18. No pushing anyone underwater
19. Always have adult supervision
20. Never jump into save someone even if they’re smaller then you – use a life saver. In case of emergency call 9-1-1.
Call Kidtastics today for swim lessons to get your child water safe in and around water. 480-994-5437.
Pool Safety Rules
Pool Safety is ALWAYS important. At Kidtastics, we try to make sure our swim kids know all their pool rules. Rules very from home to home, due to physical attributes of the home and the pool. Things like if the pool has a barrier or not, a fence or a net, water fall, diving board, etc... are reasons that each pool requires custom rules and parents need to review the pool rules every time their child enters the water or pool area. Listen to a view of our favorite kids telling Kidtastics the pool rules. So cute!!!
Call us for some addition pool rules your child needs to know. 480-994-KIDS.
Back-to-School Help
After summer break it may be a tough transition to get children back into the school routine, but with some helpful tips you may be able to ease your children a bit easier.
Tips for all Parents:
-Be compassionate. Summer breaks are like vacations. Think about what it’s like for you to make the transition back from a great vacation (yes, it’s not fair that kids get so many more breaks than you do, but try to focus on that tough transition).
-Talk about the value of education. Even if school isn’t always easy, that doesn’t mean that it’s not important. Emphasize how working hard at school helps kids to succeed. Consider using some of the ideas on emphasizing the value of school from What Kids Need to Succeed.
-Even though summer break is over, continue to have fun with your kids. Set aside some time each week to spend having fun together as a family.
Parents with children ages birth to 5
-Keep young children on the same daily routine (if possible) whether they’re going to preschool or not. This helps to keep their energy and moods at an even keel.
-Teach your kids the differences between days. Many get confused as to why they go to child care five days a week and then stay home for two. Take a calendar and have them mark off the days. Consider color-coding the days so that “yellow” days mean preschool or child care and “orange” days mean home days.
-Talk about the importance of “home time” and “school time” so that kids see the value in both (or talk about the importance of “play time” and “work time”).
Parents with children ages 6 to 9
-Help your child look forward to school. Purchase a “lucky pencil” or “lucky folder” for her to keep track of homework. Be enthusiastic about school. Your excitement will often rub off on her.
-Be honest about the fatigue that can happen during the first week back to school after a long break. Encourage your child to take a short nap after school, if needed.
-Talk about the benefits of summer breaks and the benefits of going to school. For example, it’s fun to choose what you want to do during breaks. It’s also exciting to learn new things and meet new kids at school.
Parents with children ages 10 to 15
-Don’t be surprised if you find that your child strongly resists going back to school. That’s normal. Many kids at this age love spending time with friends and would prefer to hang out with them outside of school. At the same time, other kids really look forward to going back to school.
-Help your child name what he likes best about school. Even if it starts out only with lunch and recess, go with that. As the school year progresses, see which subjects begin to interest him.
-Admit that some parts of school are hard. If you didn’t enjoy the junior high or middle school years, say so. But then talk about how much better high school is. That often helps kids to stick with the hard stuff.
The Importance of CPR Classes
CPR Lessons can be the difference between Life and Death to a loved one. Any person that takes care of children should learn CPR and recertify biannually.
When you take a CPR Course you will learn how to administer CPR to adults, Children, and Infants according to the guidelines established by the American Heart Association.
Unfortunately, when a child drowns first responders such as EMT’s, Paramedics, and Firefighters are the first to begin CPR. Lots of people are unwilling to perform CPR because they are afraid of doing it wrong or hurting the child further. If your boy or girl drowns, every second counts. You must not wait around for paramedics to show up to start CPR. Every minute that goes by reduces the chance of survival. CPR is usually successful when given within the first five minutes after the patient quits breathing. How long will it take for EMT’s to arrive? Five minutes? Ten minutes? If this is your boy or girl, can you afford to not know CPR?
Kidtastics is now offering CPR Class to our parents.
American Heart Association instructor will be offering Adult, Child & Infant CPR. Limited Spots are available. Advance registration required.
$20 per person (certification card included).
Class Location: Windgate Ranch Community Center near DC Ranch
10095 E. Windgate Ranch Road Scottsdale, 85255 (Bell/Loop 101)
Oct 23, Saturday 1-4pm (only 6 spots available)
Oct 28, Thursday 6-9pm (only 6 spots available)
Nov 6, Saturday 1-4pm (only 6 spots available)
Nov 21, Sunday 1-4pm (12 spots available)
Payment is due at the time of scheduling and is nonrefundable.
Kidtastics endorses, but is not affiliated with American Heart Association.
How to keep kids fit: Here's your chance to ask the experts!
Cardon Children's Medical Center launched a Fit Kid Challenge earlier this summer. Find out more about this great program. This program helps kids eat and exercise health, even during this exhausting summer heat. It's a four-week program that challenges kids to exercise and eat healthy when the hot summer months keep them stuck inside. It also encourages family members to participate. No registration is necessary the challenge continues until September 7th 2010 so join now.
Kidtastics thinks this is a great program. The heat makes us all feel lazy, but being unhealthy and lazy (not exercising or being inactive) in the summer months will mess up your metabolism and make it harder to get back into shape in the winter months. Keep your kids active in any program in doors that helps promote fitness. See Kidtastics Summer Programs for dance and gymnastics classes around the valley.
