Winter Water Safety Tips

The holiday season represents the highest probability of distractions and breakdown of normal supervision routines. The following winter water safety tips are a reminder to help families protect their young children as they travel this holiday season.

Winter Water Safety Tips

1.Constant Eyes On (CEO) Supervision - Never turn your back on your child around water. It takes just seconds for him/her to be in serious trouble. Segment the supervision responsibilities so there are never questions about which adult is responsible for watching the child and be aware of the distractions unique to the winter months: holiday parties, house guests, etc.
2.Educate Others - When traveling to relatives' and friends' homes, they may not understand the importance of keeping gates closed, doors locked, closing toilet seats, emptying buckets, etc. Visiting family, holiday parties and celebrations can lead to breakdowns in routine supervision and effective barriers to the water. If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
3. Decoration Hazards - Decorations and lights can pose problems with young children around the house and water. Watch for lights and electrical cords around water, make sure no outside decorations provide a means for a child to climb over a fence or open a locked gate.
4. Maintain Pools in the Winter - Keep pools well-maintained with clear water even if it is too cold to swim. If someone falls in, they can be seen and be helped faster. Pool covers need to be drained of accumulated rain water and free of debris. Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers, and ask your pool service provider if you do not know.
5. Hot Tubs - Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa. Supervision must be one adult per child due to the high temperatures and turbulence of the water in a hot tub. When young children are in the hot tub, keep the temperature below 90 degrees Fahrenheit and limit exposure to less than ten minutes.
6. Fencing - Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa, use self-closing and self-latching gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.
7. Survival Swimming Lessons – The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states, “lessons may actually reduce the risk in drowning for children ages 1-4 years old.” Infant Swimming Resource goes beyond traditional swimming instruction, by teaching children aquatic survival skills designed to help them survive should they reach the water alone.

Kidtastics' Shining Star- May

Kidtastics’ Tumbelina Present This Month’s
Shining Star: Collin and Carson

My name is Collin and this is my best bud Carson and we are four years old! When we first started gymnastics we didn’t know what to expect. We first met our teachers Miss Nikki, Miss Amber, and Miss Heidi. They really are a lot of fun. We started the class by being able to run all around and play whatever we wanted until it was time to start class. At first Carson and I were in different groups. We really didn’t mind, but we wanted to be together. So the teacher’s put us in the same group and that was awesome. We learned many great tricks that we can do on our own including teeter-totter’s and cartwheel’s. We also got to play on the bars and balance beam. Our favorite part of gymnastics is doing forward rolls down the cheese and flipping in the doughnut. It is so cool. We really like Miss Nikki because she is really funny and Carson calls her Miss Mickey, which is even more funny. We really have had a great time in gymnastics this whole year. Thank you Kidtastics for teaching us gymnastics and fun games.

Kidtastics' Shining Star April

Kidtastics’ Tumbelina Present This Month’s
Shining Star:Johana Rosenthal

My Name is Johana and I am four years old. When Ms. Laurie first arrived at my grandparent’s house to teach me to swim I was excited to meet her. I never had swim lessons before, but grandma and grandpa’s pool was really big and I wanted to jump right in. However, I realized that going underwater was scary for me. Ms. Laurie’s patience and play time in the pool made me quickly feel at ease in the water. I love pouring water over Ms. Laurie’s head and she makes me laugh when she does it to me. I explored the pool with Ms. Laurie as I acted like a spider on the wall. I went all the way around the pool. My comfort for going underwater was a slow development, but once I was comfortable going underwater with Ms. Laurie then I started to enjoy going underwater alone on the steps. I can make some really BIG bubbles. First, I learned to get rocket swim toys underwater on the first step then I was able to get rings on the bottom step. I found out that opening your eyes underwater makes finding the toys much easier. I now love going underwater so much that I even swim over the steps. Ms. Laurie told my mom that I have become a fish. I even went underwater like a shark and ate a fish. Swimming with Ms. Laurie helped me find out that going underwater like a fish is the best part about being in the swimming pool. I love Kidtastics swim program and cannot wait to swim with Ms. Laurie next summer. I will keep improving my swim skills with mommy since Ms. Laurie gave her so some many swim tips. Thanks Kidtastics for making swimming the most fun of all!

Water Safety- what parents & caregivers need to know

I read a great article today about reminding parents and caregivers how to make sure their children are water safe. It's a MUST read.
Review it for your child's safety and then make a list of pool rules for your home and ALWAYS enforce them; even for the children who are 1.5 yrs old. You can start teaching your child water safety at an early age by asking them yes or no questions about the rules. For example, "Are you suppose to go in the pool without an adult?" They answer "no" or shake their head no. Educating kids early about water safety is a successful way to prevent water accidents.

Kidtastics has a list of common pool rules that will aid you when creating your home pool rules.

KIDTASTICS POOL RULES
1. Don’t open the door to go outside
2. Don’t swim alone- must be with an adult
3. Don’t open the gate/ net – only adults are allowed to open them
4. Don’t leave pool toys in the pool
5. Always count 1-2-3 before jumping in or going underwater
6. Don’t push anyone in the pool
7. No running around the pool
8. Don’t jump or dive in shallow end
9. If you cannot swim to the side of the pool then float on your back
10. Don’t jump on the steps
11. Jump out to the middle of the pool when jumping in
12. Tell an adult before trying a flip turn
13. Make sure no one is under the diving board or slide before jumping in
14. Only 1 person on diving board at a time
15. Only go down the water slide if water is on the slide and an adult is watching
16. If you fall off the step you must swim back to the step
17. No climbing on the fountains or jumping off the rocks
18. No pushing anyone underwater
19. Always have adult supervision
20. Never jump into save someone even if they’re smaller then you – use a life saver. In case of emergency call 9-1-1.

Call Kidtastics today for swim lessons to get your child water safe in and around water. 480-994-5437.

Tips On Getting Your Child Ready To Swim

~~~~~~THINGS TO PRACTICE IN THE BATHTUB~~~~~~
Tummy Activities
~Start by filling up the tub with 2-3 inches of water
~Have your child lay on their tummy and have them use a squirt toy to make bubbles.
~Then have the child imitate the toy and blow bubbles on their own.
~While they are still on their tummy, have them practice kicking their feet.
~Next try having them put their nose in the water, you can ask them" can you tickle your nose in the water?"
~Once they can put their mouth and nose in the water, ask them to hide their eyes in the water.
~If your child is able to do all theses skills, you can fill the bath water to the level of their belly button. Have them sit on their knees, blow bubbles, tickle their nose and hide their eyes.
*These tips are a fun way to help the child get comfortable with putting their entire face in the water.
*Using toys in the bathtub is helpful when showing your child how to do certain skills and allows them to imitate their favorite toys.
Back Activities
~Have your child lay flat on their back and kick their feet
~Next, have your child lay on their back in the bathtub with their ears under water while you count to 10, do this 3 times.
~Another way to do this is to put your hand on the back of their head and have them lay back until their ears are under water. If your child can do this without a problem then try having them float on their back. You can place your hands under their neck and lower back if needed.
*Floating on your back can sometimes be a tough skill for kids to learn. If you practice with them in the bath they will be more relaxed when learning the skill in the pool.
Splash!
~Allow your kids to splash their hands and toys in the water so their face gets wet.
~Have your child pour water over their head and let the water drip down their face.(No soap)
~Let your child shower with you by either holding or having them stand with their face under the shower head. This gets the child used to the feeling of coming up and out of the pool.
*The shower gets kids used to having water in their eyes. This helps prevent them from coming out of the water and frantically wiping their eyes in the pool.
*Kids love for the parents to do these activities with them, so jump on in! If you have a big enough tub or choose to use the shower, you can have the child pour water over your head or you can show them how to get their face and head wet.
Final Tips
~Talk with your children about water safety, include the pool and the bath in these discussions. This is a great time to talk about your own personal rules like not allowing the children to turn on the water in the bathtub.
~Make it a routine! You can have your child do these activities every night during bath time before they shampoo.
~Start now, so when your Kidtastics swim instructor comes, your child can progress even faster.
**These tips can be used year round and you can practice all these activities with your kids no matter what age**
Water Safety Day
Kidtastics is proud to announce that we will be participating in Water Safety Day on March 29th!
At Water Safety Day, more than 1100 first graders will learn critical drowning prevention lessons as part of a seven week educational process. Activities include a swimming pool show, fire truck tour, music show, and a Build-A-Reminder craft activity. The event is organized by Water Watchers at Phoenix Children's Hospital and has grown in reputation and community support to become well known throughout the United States.
This year, they have something special to consider: reducing the drowning rate in our community IS possible. It happened last year, when the number of child drownings in Maricopa County was cut to less than half the previous year's total. Kidtastics is very excited to be apart of this event and to raise awareness to Arizona families and children!
Kidtastics is doing their part to prevent drownings by providing swimming lessons to children. To find out more about our swim lessons, please visit us at our website.
